True karate is this: that in daily life one's mind and body be trained and developed in a spirit of humility, and that in critical times, one be devoted utterly to the cause of justice." -- Gichin Funakoshi
Kokondo Karate combines a great variety of techniques, including kicks, punches, blocks, strikes, evasions, sweeps, throws, and joint manipulations to defeat your attacker. In general the student makes balanced use of both hand and foot techniques as a method of protection. In critical times a synthesis of ones principals of stances, posture, body shifting, hip rotation, and breathing all unite to provide a fortress of power.
Karate classes differs widely from jujitsu in that most of the Karate classes emphasize a fairly equal measure of basic technique training (kihon), forms (kata), self defense (kumite).
